Sculpture: Bronze
In Bronze Totem, Liu used a house-shaped wood sculpture as the maquette for a cast bronze piece. The nuances of the original wood sculpture are still visible in the bronze, but the heaviness of the new material gives the structure a sense of gravitas and permanence, as if it were a memorial to the idea of home, rather than a functioning home itself. An appendage juts out from the side of the house like a precarious and oversized eave. It is intended to signify the weight of past experiences and the impact that these experiences have on the evolution toward one’s present state of being.
