SILKSCREEN

Each of Liu’s silkscreens is a unique work enlivened by layers of hand-crafted and mechanical processes. In this series, Liu enlarged original rubbings and drawings, with collage, onto paper and canvas using a photographic silkscreen process. In this new format, the fields containing her sweeping, hand-drawn marks retain their autographic character, and the torn elements have been transformed into negatives of themselves. Hand-painted geometric segments of color function as conduits between forms that connect the shadowy elements and activate discreet areas of the compositions. Like the collaged red fragments in Liu’s earlier series, 41, these colors are metaphors for connections between people who pass through our lives. The enlarged scale of the silkscreens, combined with titles such as Sorry, Not Sorry and I Had My Heart Set on You magnifies these points of connection and encourages a closer examination of the meaning behind our personal relationships.
